Translated into English for the first time by final year students at UCC, the graphic novel, 'Primavere e Autunni', by Ciaj Rocchi and Matteo Demonte, is now presented in a serialized comic form, from the original Italian.
From an isolated village in the mountains of Eastern China, Wu Li Shan arrives in Italy in 1931. Wu doesn’t speak Italian, but he loves Milan; there he meets Giulia an Italian seamstress and the two start a family and a business. Before moving to Milan, Wu lived in other big cities, like Paris and Amsterdam, yet he feels that Italy could be the place for his and his family’s future. On the backdrop of Italy and China’s history from the 1930s to the 1970s, Wu’s endeavours take shape in his grandson’s memory and in these comics.
Ciaj Rocchi (1976) and Matteo Demonte (1973) are illustrators, video and comic maker based in Milan. They published many graphic novels (among which Primavere e Autunni in 2015 – Selected for the Andersen prize – and Chinamen, un secolo di cinesi a Milano in 2017 – selected for the Gran Guinigi prize) and contributed to different projects. Since 2015, they are editorial illustrators for the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera.
